About the Programme:
The Undergraduate Course (LOCF) in English is focussed on outcome-based learning that is the principal end of pedagogical transactions in contemporary higher education. This 3-year programme is divided into 6 semesters and students are required to achieve 140 credits from 14 Core papers, 4 GE papers, 2 AECC papers, 2 SEC papers and 4 DSE papers. The syllabus aims to help students to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the development of English Literature as well as literatures in English across time and space. The Core Courses in the first three semesters have been arranged chronologically starting from the Medieval Age up to the Modern and Postmodern Period. It is expected that the students would be able to study the socio-historical and political processes behind the production of the literary texts that would form the core of their study. From the fourth semester onwards, the students are introduced to certain areas, which are now integral to the study of English Literature, such as Literary Criticism, Language and Linguistics, American Literature, Literary Theory and Literary and Interpretative Devices. Considering the location of the students as well as the institute, Indian English Literature and Literatures from India’s Northeast have also been included. The Discipline Specific Electives provide access to an array of special areas such as Classical Literature, World Literature, Postcolonial Literature, Modern Indian Literature in Translation, Women and Literature, Popular Literature, South Asian Literature and Modern European Literature so that the students are able to comprehend the varied ways in which literary and intellectual developments have taken place in contemporary times. The program aims to equip students to continue academic study at higher level, to qualify for joining a profession or to provide development opportunities in particular employment settings.

Programme Outcome:
The Undergraduate Course in English will enable students to identify and appreciate the different periods of Englih literature in their socio-histical and political context; comprehend different literary forms, genres and devices; demonstrate an undertsnading and knowledge of regioal, national and global literatures written in and translated into English; illustrate knowledge of literary criticism and lingusitc tools that facilitate the understanding of literary traditions and works; and apply tools of critical theory to understand the dynamics of reading literature.

About the Programme:
The FYUGP Undergraduate Course in English aligns with the New Education Policy 2020
where quality higher education in the 21st century must aim "to develop good,
thoughtful, well-rounded and creative individuals." The role and impact of literature
is intangible and immeasurable and cannot be quantified since it addresses the humane
aspects of life. Literature brings into focus the questions of values–human and
literary. It emphasizes on the interconnectedness of all elements in the universe and
interrelatedness of lives while, simultaneously, underlining and celebrating holistic
approaches and experiences. The curricula of the Department of English, Cotton
University, covers not only established canonical courses on English literature
(including Third World Literature, Commonwealth Literature, American, Canadian,
Australian, African Literature, and New Literatures in English, Indian Literature in
English and regional Indian Literature in translation), but also emerging areas of study
such as Disability Studies and Literature, Literature and Environment, Northeast India
and its Literatures, Cultural Studies and Introduction to Subaltern Studies. The
curriculum is prepared to nurture an egalitarian and inclusive outlook capable of
fostering healthy minds and critical thinking for a strong nation and thus fulfill the
mission and vision of Cotton University as well as NEP.

Programme Outcome:
The FYUGP Undergraduate Course in English will enable students to define, classify and
critically appreciate the different literary forms, devices and genres; identify various
historical periods in English literature; demonstrate and engage in literatures written
in and translated into English across regional, national and world geographies; display
a familiarity with concepts/ideas and schools/branches of linguistic thought, literary
criticism and theory and apply them to the reading of texts; illustrate and analyze the
inter and intra textuality of gender, race, class, caste and other diversities and
complexities such as ableism and speciesism perpetuated and challenged by literary and
cultural texts; understand the basics of Research Methodologies and write
Dissertations/Research Projects.
