About the Programme:
The Postgraduate Course in English is a two-year program that examines English literature and language worldwide. The program is divided into four semesters, and students must complete 84 credits to graduate. This includes 14 core courses, 2 special electives, 2 open electives, 2 SEC papers and 1 dissertation. The syllabus has been designed to help the students acquire an in-depth knowledge of the development of English Literature as well as literatures in English across time and space. The Core Papers in the four semesters follow a chronological arrangement beginning from the Medieval Age up to the Postmodern Period and is not exclusive of postcolonial readings specific to contemporary contexts. In the third and fourth semesters students are introduced to special papers on Indian and American literatures with an aim to achieve an organic understanding of literature as accommodative. Open Elective papers on Language and Linguistics, New Literatures, Children’s Literature and Assamese Writings in Translation are offered along with the Special Papers to expose students to linguistic technicalities and a diverse range of literary writings across geopolitical spaces of the world. Given the location of the students as well as the institute, the programme offers a paper on writings from the North East to help students recognize and appreciate the rich literature emanating from the region. The final semester offers students an opportunity to engage in research activities via the DPW paper that requires them to formulate a hypothesis, engage in research and write a thesis on the same. The program aims to equip students to qualify for joining a profession or to provide development opportunities in particular employment settings.

Programme Outcome:
The Postgraduate Course in English will enable students to demonstrate an understanding of literatures written in and translated into English in their socio-cultural and political contexts; display familiarity with the rich regional and national literary traditon of India; underatnd the fundamentals of literary criticism and literary theories; comprehend linguistic tools and possibiliites of language as significant in literray ananlysis; appreciate literary texts using generic conventions and literary interpretive tools and devices; analyze the interstitial matrix of gender, class, caste, race and other socio-cultural and political diversities in literary narratives; formulate research ideas and develop suitable methodology and process.
